UNDERDOGS
Genre: Action-Comedy / Satirical Thriller
Tone: Irreverent, fast-paced, politically incorrect but ultimately heartfelt
Logline: Two dysfunctional wannabe anti-terror cops and a brilliant geek girl uncover a massive terrorist plot to detonate Bluetooth-triggered bombs hidden across Germany. To stop it, they must go undercover, break every rule, and become the unlikely heroes nobody wanted.
TREATMENT
ACT ONE
We open in chaos: a foggy, gun-filled tactical simulation gone haywire. Two teams, red and blue, battle to reach “the prize.” Among them are HAUKE JONES (red team) — rigid, stylish, rule-abiding — and DAVID HAVERKAMP (blue team) — dirty, chaotic, and a wannabe stand-up comedian. The two eliminate their enemies, then each other in a series of escalating, absurd injuries — until HAUKE is undone by his own ringtone-triggered clumsiness. “MISSION FAILED” echoes overhead as lights reveal it’s just a training exercise. Everyone’s dead. Again. Including the two losers: Hauke and David.
Their shared failure gets them paired up by the exasperated CHIEF of Germany’s Anti-Terror Task-force (ATT), much to everyone’s amusement. Mocked and sidelined, the duo form an uneasy friendship and dub themselves “THE UNDERDOGS.”
Assigned to dead-end tip lines, they stumble upon a gangland massacre in an apartment full of faceless corpses. Among the carnage, a ringing phone connects them to MEIKE MULLER — a socially awkward, paranoid computer programmer hiding in the walls. She claims to have uncovered a plot by the infamous BADER-MEINKOPF GANG (BMG), a shadowy terror group operating under the radar.
Despite their incompetence, the UNDERDOGS agree to help Meike. Along the way, they bungle a police impersonation incident, are berated by real officers, and only narrowly avoid jail. But Meike trusts them, revealing the full scope: BMG is hiding Bluetooth-triggered explosives in household devices via fake service companies. She knows because her stepbrother — a BMG defector — BCC’d her on secret emails. He, along with his dog and friends, is now dead.
Their attempts to warn the ATT are thwarted by Hauke’s poor German and the Chief’s dismissal. Both are suspended.
ACT TWO
Drunk and desperate, the trio bond at a bar. Meike reveals she’s a physical virgin but a digital sex expert. David dreams of comedic greatness. Hauke confesses he’s terrified of speaking German to superiors. They toast to being losers — and decide to fight anyway.
They go undercover: as vacuum cleaner salesmen, heating techs, and TV installers for BMG’s front companies. Hilarity ensues — mostly from Hauke’s accidental use of offensive German slang and David’s failed improv acts. Along the way, the three bond. Meike and Hauke grow close. David, despite himself, begins to admire her.
They discover BMG is using these companies to install mini-servers, syncing to a master detonator that will blow thousands of bombs simultaneously. The epicenter? The INAUGURAL MEETING OF THE NATIONS, a high-level diplomatic summit. The Chief’s dismissiveness? Suddenly suspicious.
When Meike is kidnapped by disguised “cops,” Hauke and David chase down leads — and each other. A hilarious and awkward subplot reveals Hauke’s longtime gay relationship, culminating in a surprise reveal inside a queer club. David, reeling but loyal, forgives Hauke. Meike’s life matters more.
ACT THREE
Hauke and David infiltrate the ATT precinct dressed as female sex workers, confronting the Chief and discovering he’s behind the entire BMG plot. Meike is held captive below ground. The boys free her after battling masked terrorists in grotesque, face-peeling scenes.
Meike hacks the Chief’s master detonator via an improvised Bluetooth loop that triangulates thousands of civilian devices. Her plan? Jam the detonation. Her risk? All the phones might explode.
At the summit, the Chief delivers a monologue of villainous grandeur, unaware the Underdogs are in place. When he tries to detonate, Meike executes her plan — and every phone in the room explodes in a tiny puff of smoke. No deaths, just a global flashbang.
The Chief is arrested by the UNDERDOGS in unison. They’re heroes. Meike kisses David. Hauke crushes his cursed phone. Cue: victory music and a slow-mo walk into the sunset.
THE END.
Franchise Potential:
Underdogs is built for sequels, spinoffs, and a diverse international cast. Think Brooklyn Nine-Nine meets Mr. Bean meets The Bourne Identity. Each new story could focus on different regions, upgraded tech threats, and the Underdogs’ hopeless heroism.
