Pitch Paragraph
Kommissar Digga is a comedic mystery series centered on 40-something Baltimore detective RODNEY DIGGS, who finally takes a vacation—just in time to attend his German ex-girlfriend NICHELL ECKHOFF’s fifth wedding. Determined to impress her (and maybe win her back), Rodney studies German and flies to Hamburg. But his plans go sideways when a murder occurs in Nichell’s remote hometown of Lühe, where locals speak only Plattdeutsch—an old dialect Rodney can’t comprehend. Trapped between a culture he doesn’t understand and a growing suspicion that someone in the wedding party is hiding something deadly, Rodney must solve the mystery before the wedding day… all while trying not to embarrass himself.
Series Synopsis
ACT 1
Detective RODNEY DIGGS is grinding through another gritty case in East Baltimore, but his mind is elsewhere—he’s been learning German for an upcoming trip. His ex, Nichell Eckhoff, is getting married again (fifth time’s the charm?), and Rodney’s determined to attend this one. When a murder case gets pulled from him by the FBI, his vacation officially begins—just one thing left: pass his German oral exam, which he delivers… about the very crime scene he just lost. Grossing out his classmates earns him a pass.
ACT 2
Rodney’s flight to Germany is off to a rough start, misreading his seat assignment and ending up crushed between two large passengers. Things don’t get better at the airport, where Nichell’s flamboyant police friend STEFAN MÜLLER greets him with a sign reading “Rodney DIGGA”—a nickname that sticks. Rodney explores Hamburg, reunites with Nichell on the Reeperbahn, and old sparks fly—especially when she realizes he’s speaking German. A drunken kiss confirms unresolved feelings.
The next morning, they road trip to Nichell’s hometown of Lühe. Hungover and half-asleep, Rodney wakes up to find himself in a place where no one speaks German—just Plattdeutsch. He’s baffled, frustrated, and completely dependent on Nichell to translate. Locals mistake them for a couple, and Rodney begins to hope maybe this trip wasn’t such a dumb idea after all.
At the Eckhoff estate, things seem picture perfect—until Rodney meets the groom: JOHN REESE, an American ex-soldier. Something about him smells off, and Rodney’s detective instincts kick in. When a mysterious murder occurs in the village, Rodney suspects someone in the wedding party—and now must investigate quietly in a language he doesn’t understand, with Nichell as his unwilling translator.
The countdown to the wedding has begun… and so has the hunt for a killer.
ACT 3 Summary
As the wedding draws near, the quaint village of Lühe is buzzing with preparations, but tension brews beneath the surface. RODNEY DIGGS continues his unofficial investigation, awkwardly navigating Plattdeutsch conversations with Nichell as his reluctant translator. He digs deeper into JOHN REESE’s past and uncovers inconsistencies that suggest the groom may not be who he claims to be. His instincts scream “con man,” and worse—potential killer.
During a wine-fueled rehearsal dinner, Rodney casually tests the wedding party with probing questions. A bridesmaid slips up, revealing a detail that wasn’t public knowledge about the murder victim. Meanwhile, Stefan hacks into Reese’s records and confirms Rodney’s suspicions: Reese has been using multiple aliases and was dishonorably discharged from the military for fraud.
When another person from the wedding party goes missing, Rodney is convinced Reese is involved. But with no official jurisdiction—and everyone still thinking he’s just some American ex—he needs solid proof. In classic Rodney fashion, he hatches a bold and chaotic plan to trap the killer during the wedding ceremony itself.
At the altar, just as the “I do’s” are about to be exchanged, Rodney interrupts—dramatically accusing Reese in front of the entire village. Chaos erupts. Some believe him, others are furious. But then a shocking reveal: the missing guest stumbles in, dazed, but alive—claiming Reese tried to silence them.
The truth out, Reese tries to flee, but Rodney—backed by Stefan and a furious Nichell—takes him down in front of the entire wedding party. It’s a mess, but justice is served.
In the aftermath, the wedding is (obviously) canceled. Rodney finds himself somewhat of a local hero, celebrated in the village for saving the day—despite still not understanding a damn word anyone is saying.
As he sits with Nichell on a bench overlooking the Lühe River, she thanks him with a gentle smile. There’s a moment—unspoken but undeniable—that maybe, just maybe, this story isn’t quite over between them.
Fade out…
Cue that offbeat, jazzy hip-hop outro theme.
