Synopsis

Act 1 Summary

In East Baltimore, 15-year-old aspiring music producer DAMON “DJ Kid” KIDLEY lives in yet another foster home, spending his days crafting beats and his nights at the mercy of his reckless cousin MAURICE (17). Maurice, a seasoned troublemaker who’s been in and out of jail more times than anyone can count, constantly pulls Kid into his latest schemes. The East-side streets, untouched by redevelopment, are a dangerous playground where survival often trumps ambition.

Kid harbors a dark secret—one that plays out nightly in his recurring nightmares. He sees a beautiful face, blood, her lifeless head… more blood. Though he’s innocent, his silence about what he witnessed that night makes him feel complicit. The guilt festers, but snitching is unthinkable in his neighborhood, where rats meet grim ends—a lesson Maurice never lets him forget.

Not far away, TIMOTHY T. JONES, or “Teach” to his private music students, battles demons of his own. A once-brilliant composer, Teach’s life derailed after the tragic loss of someone he loved. Now, his days are steeped in depression, and he numbs the pain with drugs. Teaching music in a makeshift studio is all that’s left of his once-promising career.

Kid’s restless night takes another turn when Maurice bursts in with his crew, tossing a rucksack at Kid and mocking his foster situation. Maurice claims the bag’s contents as Kid’s share of their latest robbery. Despite Kid’s protests, Maurice warns it’s too late to back out. Before leaving, Maurice demands Kid create a new beat for his next rap track.

Alone at last, Kid cautiously examines the rucksack, uncovering CDs, a journal, and sheet music among other items. As he sifts through them, flashbacks from that fateful night flood his mind, blending with the haunting dreams that plague him. Intrigued, Kid begins playing the CDs while flipping through the journal, immersing himself in the world of classical music. To his surprise, he’s captivated, finding solace and inspiration in a sound he never imagined loving. This discovery sparks a transformation that will change his life forever.

Act 2 Summary

Time has passed, and DAMON “DJ Kid” KIDLEY has become obsessed with classical music, spending every free moment researching, listening, and even infusing his urban beats with its influence. But in his world, nobody understands his passion for this so-called “white” music, forcing him to keep it a secret. One day, while revisiting the stolen notebook, Kid notices an address scribbled inside. Curiosity gets the better of him, and he decides to check it out.

At the address, he finds a small crowd gathered around a flyer on the door, announcing that composer TIMOTHY T. JONES, known as “Teach,” is accepting a new protégé. Unsure of the significance, Kid strikes up a conversation with NILA RAMSEY, a pretty girl carrying a violin case. Mistaking Kid for a young composer due to the music sheets in his hand, she explains that Teach is a legendary composer, and working with him could pave the way to joining the junior symphony. Intrigued, Kid lets her believe he’s an aspiring composer.

As they get to know each other, sparks fly, leading to a kiss. But their moment is interrupted by CHESTER, a snobbish classmate from Nila’s classical world, who, along with his friends, mocks Kid’s presence. The subtle racism and classism cut deep, but Kid hides his anger, determined to prove them wrong.

The next day, Kid resolves to become Teach’s new protégé. Observing that Teach never leaves his studio, Kid takes a job as a delivery boy to get closer. Through his deliveries, Kid gathers information about Teach, working hard to make a good impression. During one delivery, Kid encounters Nila at Teach’s place. The encounter is awkward, but they pretend not to know each other. Later, Nila admits she admires Teach and dreams of being his muse but doubts she’s talented enough. Kid empathizes, sharing how others underestimate him too.

As their bond deepens, Kid confides in Nila about the night that haunts him. He reluctantly joined his cousin MAURICE’s crew in a string of petty crimes, culminating in a botched mugging. A woman fell and suffered a fatal head injury. Overwhelmed with guilt, Kid called 911, leaving the phone in her hand before fleeing. Nila encourages him to go to the police, but their conversation is cut short when Maurice shows up. He threatens Kid about an upcoming scheme and assaults Nila when she insults him, leaving her shaken and wary.

Through an article about Teach, Kid learns of the composer’s humble beginnings and sees a reflection of his own struggles. Inspired, Kid makes a direct appeal to Teach to take him on as a student. Teach initially dismisses him, but after hearing a reworked piece of music Kid created from the stolen notebook, Teach is impressed. He agrees to mentor Kid, reigniting his own passion for music in the process.

Teach and Kid form a powerful bond as they compose new music together, with Kid becoming Teach’s muse. Teach even begins reconnecting with the world, attending the conservatory and earning praise for Kid’s talent. But during their collaboration, Teach opens up about his tragic past: his daughter, a gifted pianist, was killed during a violent attack while scouting a studio space. The guilt of not being there to protect her drove him into despair.

Kid is horrified as he pieces together that Teach’s daughter is the woman who died during Maurice’s mugging. Determined to confess, he is interrupted by a phone call from the press. Before they can talk again, Teach’s studio is ransacked, and Teach is beaten and hospitalized. Visiting him, Kid realizes Maurice was likely behind the robbery, using something Kid had once let slip about Teach’s cash.

Before Kid can act on his guilt, police arrive at the hospital to arrest him. His fingerprints have linked him to both the studio break-in and the cold-case murder of Teach’s daughter. Teach, devastated, demands answers. “You killed my Jamie?” he asks. Kid tries to explain, but the police drag him away before he can get the words out. Nila, shocked but still supportive, assures Teach that things aren’t as simple as they seem.

Act 3 Summary

Time has passed. The scene opens in a prison common area, where inmates are watching a live broadcast of a symphony orchestra performance. Among them is DAMON “DJ Kid” KIDLEY, now older and more reflective, sitting quietly. Onstage, TIMOTHY T. JONES conducts with passion. Before the next piece, he pauses to share heartfelt words, dedicating it to “DJ Kid, wherever you are.” The orchestra begins to play the composition that had first bonded Kid and Teach, and Kid sits, visibly moved, as the music fills the room.

Later, Kid is at home. He’s no longer in prison and has started rebuilding his life. Sitting alone in a modest space, he watches a live stream on his iPad. It’s a funeral for Timothy T. Jones, marked with “RIP.” NILA is there, slightly apart from the crowd, holding a small child or standing by a stroller, showing her respects alongside the other musicians. The child’s presence leaves the audience to wonder about its connection to Kid, though no answers are given. It’s clear Nila has arranged the live stream for Kid, knowing what Teach meant to him.

As Kid watches, tears fill his eyes, the weight of everything left unsaid between him and Teach hanging heavy. A young child tugs at his arm, pulling him away from the moment. Smiling, Kid sets the iPad down and leaves the room, the sound of the funeral fading as he focuses on the child, signaling his shift toward a new chapter in life.

The camera lingers on the iPad, still streaming the funeral. Nila steps aside, pulling out her phone to make a call. Back in Kid’s empty room, his silenced phone lights up with “UNKNOWN” as it rings. The call goes unanswered. Nila tries again, but eventually, she puts her phone away, a subtle sadness in her expression.

The story ends as Kid, now a teacher, is seen enthusiastically working with a group of children, passing on Teach’s legacy to a new generation. The unanswered call remains as a quiet thread of unresolved connection, leaving the audience to wonder what the future might hold for Kid and Nila.
